Worldwide offices
At Bain, we work seamlessly together as one firm to serve our clients wherever they need us. We have 42 offices in 27 countries around the world. We make our collective knowledge, experience and global network available to our clients.
Office overview
Bain's San Francisco office opened in 1978, Palo Alto in 2000, and over 300 Bainies now call the Bay Area home. Much of the Bay Area team's growth owes itself to our Palo Alto office. Situated in the heart of Silicon Valley, the office is a hallmark of our growing presence on the west coast, and it represents a clear commitment to serve the many entrepreneurial, tech-oriented firms in the Bay Area.
The Palo Alto office provides a unique small-office culture that reflects the best of Bain's and the Valley's entrepreneurial spirit. We serve our Silicon Valley clients jointly out of this office and the San Francisco Office, and we manage our Palo Alto and San Francisco offices as one unit, leveraging our joint strengths for our clients and providing our people with a broader range of opportunities.
Bain Bain Area has established a leadership position within the firm that doesn't owe itself solely to growth or scale. We have been the source of numerous innovations at Bain from consulting to private equity investors to taking equity in lieu of fees, the past three World Wide Managing Directors of our firm came from our office, and we take great pride in exemplifying the traits of Bain's culture that we hold most dear: A focus on results for our clients and a desire to make our office the best place for the world's top business talent.
Bain Bay Area serves a broad range of clients. We work mainly--but not exclusively--in the sectors of technology and telecommunications, private equity, healthcare, retail and consumer goods, and utilities & alternative energy. The clients we work with present us with a broad array of strategic and operational challenges, and they vary widely in size. The one trait they all hold in common is a desire to change, and our results-oriented teams are always eager to tackle their thorniest challenges.
Beyond our commercial activities, Bain Bay Area boasts a number of other unique attributes. Whether it's through our annual United Way fundraising activities (complete with auctions, taco-eating contests, themed dinners and dodgeball games), our pro bono consulting work, or hands- on work during "Community Impact day," there are numerous ways for our people to give back to their communities. There are also myriad ways that we simply have fun together. Activities such as in-office ping-pong tournaments, the Battle of the Bays, and Friday morning runs embody our competitive spirit, while impromptu wine tastings, pot-luck lunches, and family Halloween and Christmas parties highlight our continuous interest to get to know each other on a more personal level. Like many other offices we also boast an office soccer team that competes annually for the Bain World Cup, and we brought the trophy home from Stockholm in 2006. We encourage everyone to participate in all of these events, and there is never a shortage of interest.
It's not easy to capture what is most special about this place without experiencing the people who form our team. Our consulting and administrative staffs share a clear sense of purpose and identity as a group, and we look forward to sharing it with you!Our work

Our social impact
Overview
Bain Palo Alto has been involved in community engagement since the founding of the office and has worked to help dozens of organizations in the Bay Area. From pro bono consulting, to volunteering, to starting up grassroots initiatives, there is a diverse set of opportunities to get involved or to start new initiatives around individual's own particular passion. Together as an office we lend our Bain experience, practical perspective and sometimes a little sweat to help out in our communities.
Consulting opportunities
We run both fully-staffed pro bono projects as well as volunteer projects known as "Extra 10%" initiatives for a number of Bay Area nonprofits. Recent clients have included the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, St. Anthony Foundation, Zeum: San Francisco's Children Museum, Rubicon National Social Innovations, Larkin Street Youth Services, GLIDE, and Samasource.
Junior staff also has the opportunity to consult for nonprofits through Inspire, a nonprofit that applies management consulting strategies, tools, and techniques to help other nonprofits achieve greater social impact. Inspire was founded and is run by a completely volunteer staff of junior consultants from Bain as well as a few other consulting firms in the area.
Volunteering
We like to get out and into our communities and get our hands dirty too. We annually organize a Community Impact Day where the entire office shuts down and engages in service projects for organizations around the Bay Area.
Grassroots Initiatives
Grassroots initiatives are a crucial part of our Bain Cares program, allowing us to pursue the issues and topics that are most important to us. From brown bag lunches to a discussion group about world service issues, to inviting speakers to help educate the office about pertinent topics in the social sector space, we seek to inform and involve so we can all make a stronger impact.
Fundraising
One of the biggest components of our Bain Cares program is our annual fundraising campaign for United Way. Throughout the late fall and winter, the entire office participates in zany activities to help raise money. Through poker games, silent and live auctions, trivia contests, and individual pledges, the office raises a substantial amount for United Way every year.Recruiting process and contacts
