Social impact

Bain is committed to creating lasting social change. We roll up our sleeves and get results for all of our stakeholders—our clients, our communities, the social and public sectors as a whole, our people and our firm. We do it because that's who we are.

In 2011 alone, we donated over $41 million in pro bono consulting services, and our employees contributed more than 23 thousand hours of community service. Each year we celebrate the teams who have made a significant contribution and recognize some of the highest-impact projects through our Social Impact Results Challenge.

Addressing global issues

As a firm, we are working to drive large-scale change in three critical areas: education reform, global poverty and sustainability. We have made a multi-year firm-wide commitment to address education and global poverty, two of the world's most important social issues, by partnering with high-impact nonprofits. And as we work to help our corporate clients embed sustainability into their businesses, we lead by example by being certified CarbonNeutral® across our global operations.

In addition to our three major global areas, our work touches a range of social issues, from homelessness to disease prevention to at-risk youth, with local partnerships customized at the office level.

Engaging our people

Bain's approach to social impact is unique, partnering 'top-down' leadership with an equally powerful 'bottom up' grassroots effort. Our approach engages employees across all levels of the organization, and fosters an entrepreneurial spirit among our people to rally their colleagues, with Bain's support, around a cause they are passionate about. Many of our community and sustainability initiatives are driven by grassroots efforts and several have been institutionalized across the firm.

We also provide many formal opportunities for our people to engage in the social impact work that they are passionate about. Our employees can, for example, take leadership roles in nonprofit organizations through our pro bono work, or they can do externships to get hands-on experience with nonprofits. In addition to making an impact during your career at Bain, the skills and experiences acquired at Bain prove to be highly effective for successful careers in the social and public sector. Many of our alumni have gone on to leadership roles in the space and cite their Bain skills as key enablers.
