Why Bain?
My biggest reason for choosing Bain and for continuing to be passionate about working here is its incredible culture. Three aspects of the culture stand out for me.
First, the people. The people I work with daily across all levels (Partners, Directors, Associate Consultants, etc.) are not just incredibly smart people but they are all extremely down to earth, genuine people. They are passionate about their jobs and have a great sense of humor. Over the years, I have made some true friendships at Bain and have never in my life, seen a more collegial and fun team environment.
Second, the focus on professional development. There has not been a single point in my career at Bain where I have not felt like "Bain really cares about me and wants me to succeed". This is both from a professional and personal aspect. Personally, I've had to move cities twice in my career and Bain was very flexible and made it work for me. Professionally, the level of coaching and guidance I receive on a day to day basis from my supervisors and mentors at Bain is truly incredible. As part of management now, I see the relentless focus and importance Bain places on coaching, mentoring, and team satisfaction - something that is low priority with many other consulting firms.
Lastly, the passion for results. Bainies are never satisfied with just having found a great solution; they are satisfied only when the client acts on our recommendations and the results are visible. I've seen this translate into everyday discussions within the teams and with clients - where emphasis is placed on results achieved rather than how "cool" an answer is. I have also seen this translate into Bain's approach to selling work - where we are often willing to put fees at risk contingent on results and we often deny opportunities where we believe there isn't significant interest in the management team to act or where we see only marginal potential for results.

My passion
My personal passion at Bain is mentoring and professional development. My #1 success criteria for any case I take on is to have a motivated and inspired team that is constantly learning on the job. I've mentored many consultants, both formally and informally, over the last few years.
Bain has not only been great at showing me a number of great role models on this aspect but also actively recognizes and rewards people who do this well consistently.

My favorite case
The most recent case I worked on was for a financial services client where they were entering a high stakes negotiation over a 25 year $500M a year contract with an exchange. We started the diligence in a situation where the client felt confident that the most they could get out of the deal was a 20% share of the revenues. Our team took a very fact based approach and after 6 weeks we showed the client how their fair share of the contract was 40% and the path for how they could achieve it. This is $100M per year for 25 years in value that we brought to the table. The client is in negotiations and close to achieving our target. What I was personally most proud of as the manager on the case was that, despite starting off with a team with little financial services experience, we not only achieved great results but we also managed to achieve one of the best case team scores (used to measure team satisfaction monthly) in the office. The team worked hard, given the short timeframe of the case, and was incredibly motivated at the prospect of adding substantial value to the client.
