  • Why Bain?

The skills I have learned at Bain have allowed me to be very effective in service in ways that many other people cannot. I am grateful to Bain for the things I have learned and for the company's willingness to let me do things that fulfill other dimensions of my life and spirit. Finally, Bain has given me the financial ability to take some time to give something back to society.

  • My passion

The development and management of the Dallas office has been a great source of satisfaction. I currently co-head Bain's worldwide effort in capability sourcing, which presents new challenges that keep me stimulated and growing professionally. In 2000, I accepted an opportunity to take a three-year special leave from Bain to serve as a volunteer for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, leading 150 missionaries in the southwest of Japan.

  • My favorite case

While working with a large Mexican conglomerate, I (along with other case team members) proposed the opening of a Dallas office, predicting a burgeoning need for consulting services with the advent of NAFTA. Although I was a junior partner at the time, our idea was approved.

Initially, we expected our major Mexican client to be a flagship client. Shortly after we opened the Dallas office, however, the client declined to renew our contract. We went 40 days and 40 nights without revenue, during a time of restructuring at Bain. Many voices suggested the closure of the Dallas office, but we prevailed, generated clients and grew into a major Bain office.

  • My personal results story

Opening and running the Dallas office has been a steep learning curve from the beginning. As a general manager, I developed a greater empathy for our CEO clients and their HR issues, organizational problems and external obligations. I now understand the general manager perspective and can speak from real experience.

  • A final thought

I believe Bain's tremendous success over the past few years is at least partially attributable to the standard the Dallas office has set for partner productivity and business success - a standard the rest of the firm has strived to emulate. I am very proud of this. My career is an example of the tremendous and varied ways that Bain people grow and contribute value not only to business but also to society as a whole.
