I chose Bain for a number of reasons. Of all the firms with which I interacted, I was most consistently impressed by the people I met from Bain. In addition to being smart and capable (true at most top firms), they clearly enjoyed their work.
I also found their leadership position in Private Equity attractive. In addition to having a personal interest in this area, I found it to be great evidence of Bain's ability to deliver a clear bottom-line impact.
I've spent the last 3-4 years in our Private Equity practice and have enjoyed working with these clients.
Outside of the office, I enjoy tennis, skiing, and poker. Although, I've had limited time to enjoy these things since the arrival of twins in March.
My favorite case
I'm currently working with a client in the print media space which has come under tremendous pressure due to the economic downturn and secular shift from print to digital. We are working with the management team and board to build a digital business to more than offset the decline in print.
My personal results story
When I was a new consultant, I worked on an assignment at a highly leveraged tire distributor. I was asked to take a look at inventory levels at the company. Our initial analysis suggested they had $30M of excess inventory. The procurement group completely disagreed, but upon a SKU-by-SKU review excess, we together reduced inventory by more than this amount. This gave the company some breathing room and enabled a profitable exit by PE owner.
A final thought
I originally didn't intend to stay at Bain for more than 2 years. However, when I looked around at other opportunities, I realized I enjoyed my work, was learning a ton from those around me, and liked my clients. When I compared this to other opportunities, I realized I was pretty happy where I was.
