It’s hugely satisfying and great to see that Bain lived up to the progression/development claims that were made when I was recruited.

  • Why Bain?

I spent the early part of my working life in the Royal Navy as a Submarine Navigator and Patrol Boat Commanding Officer.  When I left the military I wanted to maintain that varied and challenging life while getting deeply involved in business issues.  Bain offered a fantastic opportunity to work alongside some very motivated and interesting people across multiple industries and capabilities and I was thrilled to be given a role as an Associate Consultant.

  • My passion

I think that the whole experience at Bain has been so amazing, from working with fantastic people across hugely varied industries to helping out with Friday beers, that it's hard for me to pick particular areas to highlight.

Outside the office I'm a relatively passionate sportsman, albeit one of mixed ability!  I really enjoy triathlons and have done a couple of really interesting ones, including an Ironman as well as the infamous 'Escape from Alcatraz'.  I was working in the Private Equity Ringfence while preparing for these events, but Bain was really supportive and ensured that I was able to make my training commitments as far as possible.

  • My favorite case

During the latter part of 2010 I worked for a large defense contractor helping to develop a market entry strategy.  As a former military officer this was a choice case to work on, investigating military equipment market & developing entry roadmaps, as well as sifting through potential acquisition targets.  It was particularly satisfying to see the client act on our advice and recently acquire a company as part of the strategy we laid out.

  • My personal results story

I've found that I've been able to use the skills I developed in the military to great effect at Bain and have progressed rapidly through the development levels.  Bain has been fantastic at supporting, coaching and mentoring me through these changes, and I'm now in a position where I'm leading multiple teams across complex cases and dealing with demanding clients as well. It's hugely satisfying and great to see that Bain lived up to the progression/development claims that were made when I was recruited.

  • A final thought

Bain is a great place to work. Full stop. I can't think of any friends who have been challenged as much as I have been or are as satisfied as I am with Bain.  It is hard work but you're joining a great organization that keeps career doors open for a remarkably long time allowing you plenty of opportunity to nurture nascent business, look at large corporate or embark on a fantastic consulting career. As part of interviewing it helps if you've really thought through what attracts you to consulting, why Bain and what would make you good in the role.  Good Luck!
