Right out of school, I worked to start and grow a non-profit called Nourish International. After several years, I wanted a break from the emotional roller coaster that came with starting an organization. Long term, I see myself working with for non-profit start-ups, so I wanted something that would help me build my business skill set so that when I was ready, I could join a start-up team and have a real impact. Bain's approach to results, change and professional development made me feel like it was the best place for me to do this.

I love change. The opportunity to try and do something new. I just wish I could pick one thing.

I'm not sure it's happened yet. So far, I've worked on technology rationalization for an insurance company, performance improvement for a retailer and risk management for an energy company. Of the three, the risk management work has been the most interesting because of the scale of the organizational change.

I worked with a retail client who was looking for ways to smooth its product flow. This was a problem they had been dealing with for a long time and there were a lot of popular ideas about what caused the variability depending on who you spoke to and where in the organization they sat.

We were able to get to the root of the issue relatively quickly but when we did there was a lot of organization resistance, especially from key parts of the organization. Working with the client, we were able to devise about 10 recommendations to reduce variability without affecting their core business, 9 of which they bought into fully and the 10th they were willing to experiment with moving forward.

My experience has been that Bain takes diversity seriously, genuinely cares about people and wants to be a place where all people can succeed.
