Transition to consulting
A career in consulting is very different than an academia, research or a law firm. We have a dedicated training program to prepare ADs to be successful at Bain.
There are a number of simple things you can do on your own to prepare yourself for a transition to business and consulting:
- Enroll in business courses in your school. Take advantage of the fact you are in school to learn the fundamentals of business. The most useful courses are basic courses in accounting, finance and strategy. Business communications, negotiations and marketing courses are recommended as well.
- Become involved in a consulting club. A number of universities have graduate student consulting clubs. If this does not exist in your school, check if you can join the business school consulting club. Many clubs are open to students from other schools. This is a great opportunity for you to learn more about consulting and prepare for the case interviews with fellow students.
- Read the business press. Get yourself comfortable with the business news and terms. Suggested business resources include Wall Street Journal, Business Week, The Economist and New York Times business section. A great way to get familiar with business is through business podcasts. Most of these news sources as well as business schools have free podcasts you can subscribe to through iTunes.
