Advanced degree holders

Bain welcomes applications from PhDs and post docs, graduating JDs and LLMs, and MDs and medical residents. Hiring practices vary somewhat by market, and are indicated on local office or university pages. Unless otherwise instructed, PhDs and post docs, MDs and JDs should apply for the consultant position.

Individuals with Masters degrees (excluding MBAs) are typically considered for the associate consultant position. Any exceptions will be noted on the local office page or on your university page.

Application process

We require candidates to submit the following application materials through our online application:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume (1-2 pages)
  • Unofficial graduate transcript
  • Test scores (e.g., GRE, LSAT, MCAT, Boards)
  • TOEFL (see requirements below)
  • Office preferences

When filling out the online application, be sure to select the appropriate degree type to facilitate application review. Once your application is received, it will be reviewed by our application committee, and you will be notified if you are selected to interview.

Please see individual office page for local requirements and deadlines.

The global application deadline for candidates in US schools with anticipated graduation dates in 2011 is typically late September-early October. Please check back in August for an updated deadline.

TOEFL requirements: Our North American offices require TOEFL scores of candidates who are non-native English speakers. An exemption is provided for any individual who earned their undergraduate degree at a US university or a non-US university where English is the only language of instruction.

Interview process

The interview process for Advanced Degree candidates generally includes a mix of case and experience interviews. However, the interview process may vary based on the local office. Please check the local office page for details on the interview process.

The first round generally consists of case interviews only.

Candidates who advance to the second and subsequent rounds will do additional case interviews in addition to experience interviews. They may also have the opportunity to have a non-evaluative, one-on-one informational interview with one of our consultants.

Depending on the specific circumstances, first round interviews may be conducted face-to-face in a Bain office or on a university campus or by phone. Second round interviews are typically face-to-face.

We strongly encourage you to prepare for interviews. While our interview preparation information can help you get started, here are some additional tips for advanced degrees.
